Controlling Coolatai Grass (Hyparrhenia hirta)

Coolatai Grass is an introduced densely tufted, tussock-forming perennial grass which is currently listed as Declared under the Natural Resource Management Act 2004. The main distribution of Coolatai Grass is within the Northern Adelaide Region scattered at various densities within private lands as well as public lands such as Council reserves, roadsides, and conservation parks with smaller infestations spread to other parts of the state.EBS Restoration and EBS Ecology recently concluded a two year study investigating the effects of various herbicide treatments and application methods on Coolatai Grass. A total of eight treatments and two application methods were identified to have been used in the past by land managers.

Our research identified the effectiveness of each treatment within a very controlled manner and has resulted in a more targeted approach for land managers when controlling Coolatai Grass.

Bushcare

Bushcare is just one service offered by EBS Restoration, all aimed at re-establishing, enhancing and protecting native vegetation. Bushcare is one our favourite and most important services, utilising our skills in identifying native species and passion for protecting native vegetation. Bushcare methods are generally used in areas of native vegetation where more care is required to ensure no off-target damage. Methods used in Bushcare depend on target species, quality of the native vegetation and requirements of the client. EBS Restoration use cut and swab, frill and fill, drill and fill, spot spraying and hand pulling.

EBS Restoration has completed many Bushcare Projects such as:

  • Port Bonython Pest Plant Control  -  Sensitive Bushcare was undertaken in a coastal environment utilising spot spraying, cut and swab and hand pulling. Species controlled amongst some quality native vegetation included Coppery Mesemb, African Boxthorn, Wild Tobacco, Century Plant, Horehound and Feathertop Rhodes Grass.
  • City of Tea Tree Gully Roadside Vegetation Management Program  –  weed control using sensitive Bushcare techniques has been undertaken along five roadsides. Weed control within native vegetation areas followed the ‘Bush For Life Minimal Disturbance Bush Regeneration Techniques’.
  • Sturt Highway Bushcare  –  Alongside other services such as revegetation (planting and direct seeding) and ongoing site maintenance, EBS Restoration provided Buhcare services across remnant native vegetation. Methods used included drilling and frilling larger woody weeds, spot spraying herbaceous species and hand pulling.

Christies Creek Upgrade

The Christies Creek Upgrade is a large scale, multi-site, multi stage contract working closely with one of SA’s major civil works operators. This project is part of the Waterproofing the South program, a series of projects including wetlands and detention basins making up a localised integrated water resource management strategy. It is based entirely in the City of Onkaparinga for the provision of alternative water sources. The project will maintain environmental flows in Christies Creek, improve biodiversity and provide for recreation opportunities.

EBS Restorations’ scope within the project included:

  • Extensive site preparation and weed control Planting of approximately 80,000 wetland, ephemeral and terrestrial plants as per landscape drawings Mulching Pest control (carp)
  • Monitoring and maintenance

Aquatic plantings were done to Australian Height Datum (AHD) specification, to ensure optimum plant establishment and also to ensure maximum operating effectiveness of the wetland.
